Audiencing - a guide to four audiencing types in everyday life & why this matters

Who is this Book's Audience?

This book is for you if:
  • You think about how people interpret media, ideas, or events
  • You’re interested in attention, perception, or meaning-making
  • You’ve noticed that disagreement is often about perspective, not facts
  • You’re curious how experience is constructed by individuals and groups
  • You reflect on how you yourself “see” things, not just what you see

This book is probably not for you if:
  • You prefer explanations with dynamic answers
  • You’re not interested in how relationships and perception shapes experience
  • You’re looking for purely practical or instructional content
That’s fine, as this book is not trying to be for everyone.

What is this book about then?

This book is not about audience or media consumption, it zooms out to think more fundamentally about how meaning is actively constructed while we give our attention, and why.

A process I refer to as audiencing.

Why this matters?

William Shakespeare once wrote, "All the world's a stage..."

And a few hundred years later comedian George Carlin replied,  “If “All the world’s a stage” then where is the audience sitting?”

In this book I present you with a new way to think about where you are sitting as an audience - and how this shapes everyday experience, including:

How we understand:
  • media
  • disagreement
  • identity
  • attention
  • relationships
  • ethics
  • AI
  • even self-perception

How?

The book’s informal yet  in-depth style means it is accessible, informative, and entertaining.

References to research and pop culture make it suitable for people teaching or studying media, literacy, rhetoric, sports and performance psychology, communications, the performing and visual arts, law, business and marketing, and socio-psychology.

Audiencing is therefore a useful primer text for coaches, trainers, and teachers, for school, undergraduate and graduate-level courses where the subject of audiences needs to be discussed.

The concept can easily form the basis of discussion about the nature and art of audiencing in different contexts of human life.

The book is also applicable to people who need to consider audience analysis, ethics, and artificial intelligence.

Audiencing presents a deep-reaching concept that will have appeal to anyone who audiences in their lives  and who is fascinated about it — which is many of us.
